Summer is all about getting outside and exploring local wonders; Scales Nature Park boasts a variety of activities for young ones and parents alike… have a read below about our MMC family, The McKinnon’s, slithering good time at this beautiful park:

Nestled away in the woodland just south of Orillia, is a wonderful Wildlife centre. Scales Nature Park houses one of the largest and most complete live collections of Canadian reptiles and amphibians, so there’s certainly a lot to look at. If you plan on visiting with infants I would recommend baby wearing or a smaller stroller. We brought our van of a stroller (read:LARGE) and ended up leaving it parked in the corner most of the visit. There are two sets of stairs and narrow corridors we weren’t expecting.
When we entered the building we were greeted by smiling staff members immediately. It was explained to us that normally they do guided tours; we were there on a abnormally busy day. Instead there would be a staff member at each “station”. Even with it being fairly busy, we always had someone there to guide us, and I was thoroughly impressed with their knowledge. On our visit we got to view, even touch and hold a wide a variety of animals. From little geckos, to a great big monitor, you are given the opportunity to learn about these creatures in a hands on or off matter- depending what you’re comfortable with. Upstairs they have the discovery room, a quieter room. Here we got to learn about animals that make better companions than the ones downstairs.
Momma and Linkin enjoying some terrarium views; Baby wearing was the best choice for these two to get the most out of their visit.
There’s also a few tables set up with different objects and booklets to examine. Outside we found a great little picnic area to stop for lunch, before going to explore the wilderness trail. We didn’t walk it for very long (bring bug repellent) but I found out later the trail is spread across 21 acres. If you’re looking for somewhere fun and affordable to spend a day with the kids I highly recommend Scales Nature Park. Their knowledgeable staff and hands on experience was very impressive. We can’t wait to return – we have to finish the wilderness trail!
Scales Nature Park is open for your family Monday- Saturdays 10am-5pm. Contact them for any information about visiting this summer.
