… And then I birthed a baby vaginally.

1)When it comes to your body no one will advocate for what you want like you.
Doctors + Midwives may be the professionals but its your body and not forgetting that is paramount. DO YOUR RESEARCH – prenatally!
2) Look at and understand your options.
For my second cesarean, I voiced that I wanted delayed clamping, skin to skin immediately as long as respiration was ok, immediate nursing and saving the placenta ( I planned on encapsulating it this time around.) I also looked into the benefits/risks around vaginal seeding. Each person in the operating theatre introduced themselves to me, music was playing, and my doctor managed to find the perfect words to help me accept that my body was still doing something amazing when I said I felt like I was broken.
3) Find your support system and put it in place.
I had many backup plans if another C-Section was necessary and I knew what I wanted and who I wanted there for me. My husband was behind me and I knew what I wanted and I elected to have a backup date booked for the OR. I elected to have no cervical checks during my check ups and was happily surprised about not having to push for my right to keep hands out of there prior to (and during) labour – my doula and husband helped me plan prenatally for all of these requests.
4) Prepare yourself for the best cesarean possible.
Not all vbac attempts end in a non surgical birth; sometimes your baby and you need help and being able to remember that it’s OKAY is huge. ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS. See Tips 1 & 2, and book a Prep For Your VBAC class with Mountain Momma Collective.
5) Prepare for your recovery- mentally AND physically.
Every birth is different with its own set of challenges; knowing how to take care of yourself after is a huge part of being able to care for your little new bundle. Ask for help and know your limits. Set boundaries, communicate your needs with family and friends, and REST. Discuss with your care provider prenatally what recovery looks like for both vaginal and belly births, and reach out the MMC doulas about postpartum resources in your community.
